Several countries across the Gulf region and West Asia are expected to experience intense rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms from March 23 to March 27, raising concerns about localized flooding, especially in the UAE. 

In recent days, Oman and Saudi Arabia have already witnessed heavy rains and waterlogging. The rain system is now extending toward UAE, Qatar, and Kuwait, where conditions are expected to worsen in the coming days.

Western Disturbance Driving the Weather

The current weather pattern is linked to a strong Western Disturbance, originating from the Mediterranean region. This system moves inland through Turkey and travels across West Asia toward the Himalayan region of India.

Although such rainfall is locally known in the Gulf as part of seasonal transition (“Ghaith”), the unusual factor this time is its extended duration of nearly a week. Rainfall intensity may fluctuate but is expected to persist through the end of March.

As the system progresses, it is likely to bring rain, hailstorms, and even snowfall across a wide region including:
• Gulf countries
• Iran and Iraq
• Palestine and Israel
• Afghanistan and Pakistan
• Northern parts of India such as Jammu & Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh

UAE: Rain to Continue Until Friday

In the UAE, convective cloud formations have already begun developing, leading to thunderstorms and heavy showers. Major cities including Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Al Ain, and Ras Al Khaimah are expected to receive rainfall.

Rainfall is likely to intensify from Abu Dhabi toward the northern emirates, increasing the risk of
• Waterlogging
• Traffic disruptions
• Reduced visibility

Authorities, including the National Centre of Meteorology (NCM), have issued warnings urging residents to remain cautious.

Despite the UAE’s typically low annual rainfall, sudden heavy downpours sometimes reaching up to 20 cm within a week are becoming more frequent, a trend linked to climate change.

Saudi Arabia’s meteorological authorities have issued Red, Orange, and Yellow alerts across several provinces.
• Eastern regions including Al-Ahsa, Al-Uqair, and Haradh under warning early Monday
• Cities like Jubail, Khobar, Dammam, Dhahran, Qatif, and Ras Tanura on alert from afternoon to night
• Southern regions such as Asir and Najran may experience hailstorms and strong winds

• Flash floods
• Thunderstorms
• Reduced visibility due to dust and rain

Oman and Iran Also Affected

Heavy rainfall is expected across Oman, particularly in:
• Muscat
• Buraimi
• Sohar
• Duqm
• Al Batinah regions
Meanwhile, rainfall is likely to intensify in southern Iran and parts of Iraq.

Rain is also forecast in Israel, Lebanon, and Gaza, regions already affected by ongoing conflict. The adverse weather may:

• Increase hardship for civilians

Rainfall activity across the Gulf is expected to continue intermittently until the end of March, with isolated showers possible in early April. While the rains may benefit water reservoirs and agriculture, they also pose significant risks of flooding and disruption.

കടുത്ത ചൂടിന് ആശ്വാസമായി കേരളത്തിൽ ഇന്നും (വ്യാഴം ) വേനൽ മഴയ്ക്ക് സാധ്യത. ഇടുക്കി, കണ്ണൂർ, കാസർഗോഡ് ജില്ലകളിൽ ഇന്ന് ശക്തമായ മഴയ്ക്കുള്ള യെല്ലോ മുന്നറിയിപ്പ് (Yellow alert) കേന്ദ്ര കാലാവസ്ഥ വകുപ്പ് നൽകിയിട്ടുണ്ട്.

 മണിക്കൂറിൽ 50 കിലോമീറ്റർ വരെ വേഗതയിൽ കാറ്റ് വീശാനും സാധ്യതയുണ്ട്. അതേസമയം, പുറത്തുനിന്ന് വൈദ്യുതി ലഭിക്കുന്നതോടൊപ്പം വേനൽ മഴയും ലഭിക്കുന്നതോടെ ലോഡ്ഷെഡ്ഡിങ്ങ് വേണ്ടിവരുന്നില്ലെന്നാണ് KSEB വിലയിരുത്തൽ. എങ്കിലും പലയിടത്തും വൈദ്യുതി തടസം ഉണ്ട്. 
 
വേനൽ മഴ ലഭിച്ചതോടെ സംസ്ഥാനത്ത് താപനിലയിൽ നേരിയ കുറവ് രേഖപ്പെടുത്തിയിട്ടുണ്ട്. ശക്തമായ മഴയിലും കാറ്റിലും ഇടുക്കിയിലും മറ്റ് സ്ഥലങ്ങളിലും നാശനഷ്ടങ്ങൾ ഉണ്ടായി. മെയ് രണ്ട് വരെ ശക്തമായ വേനൽ മഴയുണ്ടാകുമെന്ന് കാലാവസ്ഥ വകുപ്പ് വ്യക്തമാക്കി.

 അതേസമയം, വടക്കൻ ജില്ലകളിൽ കടുത്ത ചൂടാണ് അനുഭവപ്പെടുന്നുണ്ട്. പാലക്കാട് ജില്ലയിൽ രേഖപ്പെടുത്തിയ താപനില 39.3 ഡിഗ്രി സെൽഷ്യസ് ആണ്. കോഴിക്കോട് ജില്ലയിലും ഉയർന്ന താപനിലയായ 37. 9 ഡിഗ്രി സെൽഷ്യസ് രേഖപ്പെടുത്തി. 12 ജില്ലകൾക്ക് നൽകിയിരുന്ന യെല്ലോ മുന്നറിയിപ്പ് പിൻവലിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്.

വടക്കൻ കേരളത്തിൽ കാലാവസ്ഥ വകുപ്പ് മുന്നറിയിപ്പ് നൽകിയിട്ടുണ്ടെങ്കിലും വ്യാപകമായ വേനൽ മഴ ലഭിക്കാനുള്ള സാധ്യത കുറവാണ്. കഴിഞ്ഞദിവസം തെക്കൻ ജില്ലകളിൽ ലഭിച്ചത് പോലുള്ള വടക്കൻ കേരളത്തിൽ പ്രതീക്ഷിക്കേണ്ട. എങ്കിലും ഒറ്റപ്പെട്ട മഴ ലഭിക്കും. 

കോട്ടയം ജില്ലയിൽ ഇന്നലെ ശക്തമായ മഴ പെയ്തു. കാറ്റിലും മഴയിലും നാശനഷ്ടം ഉണ്ടായി. കോട്ടയം ജില്ലയിൽ വീട് ഭാഗങ്ങളിൽ ഇന്ന് രാവിലെ 8 30 വരെ മഴയുടെ കണക്ക്. മീനച്ചിൽ റെയിൻ റിവർ മേണിറ്റിറിംഗ്  നെറ്റ് വർക്കിൻ്റെ മാപിനികളിൽ രേഖപ്പെടുത്തിയത്.
