The rain in the hills of Meppadi was relentless, turning the lush green slopes of the Meenakshi Estate into a heavy, saturated landscape. For Palraj and his wife, Koodammal, it was just another routine day. As laborers at the estate's cardamom plantation, they were used to the weather. Sheltered near their quarters on the Kalladi tunnel road, they stood waiting for a bus to take them toward Kalpetta.
They were talking quietly, listening to the steady drumbeat of the rain, completely unaware that the mountainside above them was about to give way.
Then came the sound. It wasn’t just the roar of water, but a deep, terrifying groan of the earth itself.
Before they could fully process the noise, a monstrous wall of mud, rocks, and debris tore down the slope. The force of the landslide slammed into a heavy lorry parked up the road, lifting it like a toy and sweeping it down the asphalt directly toward them.
"Run!"
They bolted, but the thick, rushing mud was too fast. It grabbed at their feet, anchoring them to the ground. Within seconds, the massive, out-of-control lorry was bearing down on them. They were knocked into the swirling sludge, slipping directly under the shadow of the moving vehicle.
To anyone watching, it seemed like an absolute certainty that the couple would be crushed.

But fate intervened in the span of a single heartbeat. The sliding lorry slammed into a parked jeep, the violent collision grinding the heavy vehicle to a sudden, screeching halt.
The immediate danger of being run over had passed, but the nightmare wasn't over. Koodammal was completely pinned, buried deep in the thick, suffocating mud beneath the chassis of the truck. Panicked but driven by pure adrenaline, Palraj fought against the debris. He refused to let go of his wife's hand. With a desperate, final surge of strength, he hauled her out of the mud's deadly grip.
They stood there in the pouring rain, gasping for air, covered in mud, and entirely unhurt. It was a escape so narrow it felt impossible.
Today, Palraj and Koodammal are safe, staying at the relief camp set up at the Meppadi Polytechnic College. The viral CCTV footage of their rescue has shocked thousands across the state, but for the couple, the memory is far more personal.
"When the mud came, we just ran," Koodammal recalled, her voice still trembling. "Then the lorry was just... there. I don't even know what happened next. It is only by the grace of God that we are breathing."
Looking at each other amidst the bustle of the relief camp, Palraj and Koodammal know the truth: they didn't just survive a landslide. They were given a second life.

ഏകദേശം 2,700 പേർ ജോലി ചെയ്തിരുന്ന മാളിൽ നിന്ന് നിരവധി പേരെ സുരക്ഷിതമായി ഒഴിപ്പിച്ചു. നാല് പേർക്ക് പരിക്കേറ്റതിനെ തുടർന്ന് ആശുപത്രിയിൽ പ്രവേശിപ്പിച്ചു. ഇവിടെയും ഒരാൾ ഹൃദയാഘാതത്തെ തുടർന്നാണ് മരിച്ചത്.
രക്ഷാപ്രവർത്തനത്തിനായി 4,600 ഉദ്യോഗസ്ഥരെ വിന്യസിച്ചതായി ജപ്പാൻ പ്രധാനമന്ത്രി സനായ് തകായ്ചി അറിയിച്ചു. ആയിരക്കണക്കിന് ആളുകളെ ദുരിതാശ്വാസ ക്യാമ്പുകളിലേക്ക് (Relief Camps) മാറ്റിപ്പാർപ്പിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ടെന്നും പല പ്രദേശങ്ങളിലും വൈദ്യുതി വിതരണം തടസ്സപ്പെട്ടതായും അവർ വ്യക്തമാക്കി.
