Will the Scorching Heat in the UAE Ease? Suhail Star Set to Appear

People across the UAE are struggling with intense summer heat. Although residents are accustomed to the country’s high summer temperatures, those living in cities including Dubai are now waiting for some relief. Meanwhile, the Suhail Star, traditionally considered a sign that the intensity of the summer heat is beginning to decline, is expected to appear in the sky on August 24, according to the Emirates Astronomy Society.

Peak of the Scorching Heat

Al Qeis, traditionally considered the most intense period of summer heat, usually begins in early June and becomes stronger during July and August.

According to traditional Arab weather calculations, the most intense phase of the summer heat is considered to end when the stars rise around August 11. This is followed by the appearance of the Suhail Star on August 24.

The ‘Star of Yemen’ Arrives

The Suhail Star, also known as the ‘Star of Yemen’, has traditionally been regarded in Arab culture as a sign that temperatures will gradually begin to fall.

According to traditional beliefs, the appearance of Suhail marks the beginning of a transition period lasting around 40 days. During this period, the weather is expected to gradually shift from extreme summer heat towards relatively cooler conditions. This period is commonly known as ‘Sufriya’.

Temperatures Above 50°C

Meanwhile, the UAE is still experiencing the peak of its summer heat. Temperatures in several parts of the country have risen above 50°C.

On August 5, the UAE recorded temperatures as high as 51.2°C, according to an earlier announcement by the National Center of Meteorology (NCM).

Unstable Weather Alongside the Heat

Along with the extreme heat, some parts of the UAE have recently experienced unstable weather. Rain in certain areas has provided temporary relief from the high temperatures.

The weather authorities have explained that intense heating of the Earth’s surface during summer can contribute to the formation of towering clouds.

However, heat alone does not cause rainfall. Humidity, moist air masses, atmospheric instability, low-pressure areas in the upper atmosphere, and favorable winds must also combine to create suitable conditions.

Possibility of Thunderstorms and Rain

When these conditions come together, thunderstorms and strong winds can occur even when temperatures remain close to 50°C.

Expatriates Await Relief

Indian expatriates and other residents across the UAE are hoping that the appearance of the Suhail Star will mark the gradual easing of the scorching summer heat.

However, more than two weeks remain before the Suhail Star is expected to appear in the sky. Until then, the extreme heat may continue, and residents are advised to take necessary precautions to protect themselves from high temperatures.

ഇന്നും നാളെയും വടക്കൻ ജില്ലകളെക്കാൾ കൂടുതൽ മഴ പ്രതീക്ഷിക്കുന്നത് മധ്യകേരളത്തിലും തെക്കൻ ജില്ലകളിലും ആണ്. വടക്കൻ കേരളത്തിൽ കണ്ണൂർ ജില്ലയുടെ കിഴക്കൻ മലയോര മേഖല, വയനാട്, മലപ്പുറം ജില്ലയുടെ കിഴക്കൻ മലയോര മേഖല, കോഴിക്കോട് ജില്ലയുടെ ഇടനാട് കിഴക്കൻ മേഖല എന്നിവിടങ്ങളിൽ വരും ദിവസങ്ങളിൽ ശക്തമായ മഴ സാധ്യത നിലനിൽക്കുന്നു. 

അതേസമയം കോട്ടയം, പത്തനംതിട്ട, ഇടുക്കി ജില്ലകളിലും എറണാകുളം ജില്ലയുടെ കിഴക്ക മേഖലയിലും ശക്തമായതോ അതിശക്തമായതോ ആയ മഴ സാധ്യത. 

കേന്ദ്ര കാലാവസ്ഥ വകുപ്പ് ഇന്ന് കോഴിക്കോട്, വയനാട് , കണ്ണൂർ  കാസർകോട് ജില്ലകളിൽ ശക്തമായ മഴ സാധ്യതയെ തുടർന്ന് മഞ്ഞ അലർട്ട് പ്രഖ്യാപിച്ചു.
