According to The Wall Street Journal, the administration is exploring the possibility of charging $100,000 (approximately ₹1 crore) for Optional Practical Training (OPT) authorization.

Move Follows Rejection of H-1B Fee Proposal

The reported proposal comes after a U.S. court rejected an earlier plan to impose a $100,000 fee on H-1B work visas. According to the report, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is now examining whether a similar fee could be applied to the OPT program.

Optional Practical Training (OPT) is a program available to students holding F-1 visas. It allows international graduates to work in the United States for one to three years in a field related to their studies. The program is considered a key pathway for gaining professional experience and eventually transitioning to longer-term work visas.

Indian Students Could Be Among the Most Affected

According to 2024 data, nearly 419,000 international graduates were working in the U.S. under the OPT program. The proposed fee could affect more than 350,000 Indian students currently studying in the country. As a result, the proposal is expected to face strong opposition, particularly from the Indian student community.

Concerns for Universities and Employers

OPT is one of the main reasons international students choose to study in the United States.
