France is facing a severe drought following a prolonged heatwave and a lack of rainfall. Water restrictions have been imposed across nearly 70% of the country. Drought warnings have also been issued in most regions, including the capital Paris.
‘Crisis Alert’ in 67 Departments
France has declared the highest level of drought alert, known as the ‘Crisis Alert’, in 67 of the country’s 101 administrative departments.
Authorities said the prolonged heatwave over the past three months, combined with insufficient rainfall, has pushed France into one of the worst drought situations in its history. Several cities have recorded record-high temperatures.
Drinking Water Shortage Worsens
The drought has led to severe drinking water shortages in several parts of the country. More than 30,000 people are currently directly affected by the shortage, according to authorities.
Drinking water is being supplied to affected areas through bottled water and tanker trucks. Meanwhile, wildfires triggered by the extreme heat have further complicated the situation.
Strict Restrictions on Water Use
In areas under the highest ‘Crisis’ alert, water use has been restricted to essential services. Water is being prioritised for drinking, sanitation, healthcare and civil protection services, including firefighting.
Restrictions are also in place in areas under lower alert levels. The use of water for gardening, filling swimming pools and washing vehicles has been strictly limited. Agricultural water use has also been restricted.
Rainfall Fell by Nearly 70% in July
France received nearly 70% less rainfall than usual in July, according to authorities. Increased water consumption for agriculture and tourism has also contributed to groundwater levels falling below normal.
The country’s Bureau of Geological and Mining Research said the decline in groundwater levels has become a major concern amid the continuing drought.
Hottest and Driest July on Record
According to France’s national weather agency, Météo-France, the country has just experienced the hottest and driest July in its recorded history.
Temperatures in southeastern France are expected to rise above 35°C, prompting authorities to issue further weather warnings. Environment Minister Monique Barbut has called an emergency meeting to assess the ongoing water crisis.
Water Shortage Becomes Election Issue
Meanwhile, the water crisis is emerging as a major issue ahead of France’s upcoming presidential election. Former Prime Minister and political leader Gabriel Attal has called for a strong national water policy, saying the issue should not be treated as an agenda limited to environmental parties.

തിരുവോണത്തിന് എറണാകുളം, കോട്ടയം, പത്തനംതിട്ട, ഇടുക്കി ജില്ലകളില് ആണ് കൂടുതല് മഴ പ്രതീക്ഷിക്കുന്നത്. എന്നാല് ഇന്നത്തെ പോലെ മഴ ശക്തമാകില്ല എന്നാണ് അനുമാനം. വടക്കന്, മധ്യ, ജില്ലകളില് പകല് മഴയുണ്ടാകും. പക്ഷേ ദീര്ഘമായ ഇടവേളകള് പ്രതീക്ഷിക്കാം. കാലാവസ്ഥാ വകുപ്പ് ബുധനാഴ്ച പത്തനംതിട്ട, കോട്ടയം, എറണാകുളം, ഇടുക്കി ജില്ലകളിലാണ് മഴ സാധ്യതയെ തുടര്ന്ന് മഞ്ഞ അലര്ട്ട് നല്കിയത്.
